Abstract
It has been noted that some cultures of mycobacteria degraded Tween 80 or produced a turbidity in the Tween 80 liquid medium, and these characteristics have been applied for the classification of mycobacteria.
In the course of the biochemical study of soil acid fast bacilli, Tween 80 degradation and turbidity production were surveyed in the present study.
1) Among the control strains of mycobacteria, M. kansasii exhibited a distinct positive degradation, M. phlei, M. balnei, M. fortuitum, P-19 and P-15 strains were moderate positive but M. avium, Group-III and, P-5 strains were negative within 5 days incubation.
2) The concentration of Tween 80 associated with the degradation and turbidity production in that 0.6~0.3 % of Tween 80 solution is optimal for degradation and higher concentration is required for the turbidity production.
3) In the soil acid fast bacilli isolated, most strains degraded Tween 80 within 5 days regardless of the pigment formation and some cultures produced turbidity, but more strains produced turbidity in the non-pigmented strains. Among non-pigmented strains, some precipitated Tween 80 forming opacity in supernatant solution.
